Rest In Peace

Thank you for the Knowledge

John Harris Memorial Page

This is a memorial page for the late and great mentor of many, John Harris, who promoted so many valuable techniques and ideas, and encouraged me to dive deeper into the bodywork field.

Here are "some photos" of our 2004 quest for vestigial remnants of Eastern Europe's former empires of therapeutic bodywork, athletic training, holistic arts and hearty nutrition. Thank you for all the knowledge and insights. Rest in Peace John!

Hungary 2004 - Eger Day Trip

Eger is famous for its wine "Egri Bikavér" (Bull's Blood of Eger), thermal baths and other historic attractions. Items from the early Iron Age were found in the vicinity of downtown Eger, possibly named after alder birch trees. The first Hungarian tribes settled there in the 10th century, and Saint István, the first Hungarian king, made Eger the seat of a bishopric. However the Mongolo-Tartars set fire on the town in 1241, and Eger became the frontier of Western Europe for 600 years. Hungarian King Béla IV permitted a stone castle in 1248 and grapes were planted on the site of forests, the Gothic Bishop's Palace was erected, new houses and roads in town and to nearby mines. During the 1500s, Muslim sieges resulted in a 91-year-long Turkish Ottoman rule in Eger, when churches were converted into mosques and the Eger minaret was built. In 1687 the Holy League Crusader army led by Charles of Lorraine, expelled the Turks from Eger, after the castle of Buda had been retaken in 1686. Soon after, the Hungarians lost the 1703–1711 war of independence against the Habsburgs which caused many local Protestants to leave. After the Plague, immigration into Eger was strong, and the population rose from 6000 to 10,000 between 1725 and 1750. Muslims were assimilated into the Christian population. A denser population resulted in several major fires and a cholera epidemic, and another War of Independence in 1848, which failed. In the 20th Century, the Ottoman Sultanate was busy with the Italo-Turkish War (1911), the Balkan Wars and several coups (1912–1913), the Battle of Sarikamish (1914–1915), the Armenian genocide, Gallipoli campaign (1915–1916), the Mesopotamian campaign, the Arab Revolt (1916-1918), World War I (1914-1918), Treaty of Sèvres partition (1920), until Atatürk's Turkish War of Independence (1919–1923) and the abolition of the Ottoman sultanate in 1922. Austria-Hungary was broken after WWII, then the bloody 1956 Soviet Invasion and fall of Soviet Union.
All this has shaped current Hungarian society with tough, resilient and independent people. Beneath Eger lie 60 miles (96 km) of tunnels that in times past provided building stone, sanctuary against invading Turks, and, more recently, cellars to mature wine. The tunnels were dug in a soft rock, and subsidence has caused extensive surface damage. The national government has provided subsidies to save the town’s many historic buildings from further destruction.
